Delta Arts Center Celebrates Opening of Field Notes: Black Leisure and The Land and Black Cowboys: Generations Chapter II

The Delta Arts Center recently celebrated the opening of two exciting new exhibitions: Field Notes and Black Cowboys: Generations Chapter II. The gallery reception welcomed community members to view the works, explore the stories behind the art, and engage with the rich histories and contemporary perspectives showcased in both exhibits.

Following the opening, the center hosted a three-part Friday workshop series featuring the exhibiting artists. Willie Welch taught participants his approach to drawing, focusing on observation and technique. At Art Crush, William Gattis led pop-up calligraphy sessions, encouraging attendees to experiment with lettering as an art form. The series concluded with Richard Tuck, who shared his methods for drawing and painting and discussed his creative process.

The Black Cowboys exhibition received a special symbolic visit from Carter G. Woodson, honoring the historical contributions of Black cowboys in American culture. Children attending the workshops participated in a scavenger hunt throughout the gallery, donning cowboy hats and exploring the details of the exhibition in a playful, immersive way.

The opening and subsequent workshops highlighted Delta Arts Center’s commitment to combining art, history, and interactive learning, offering the community meaningful ways to connect with Black culture and heritage.
